Vermont is one of six states in the New England region of the United States. In addition to being one of the smallest states (45th by total area), it is the second least populated state (only Wyoming has fewer residents). It is the only New England state without a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered to the east by New Hampshire, to the south by Massachusetts, to the west by New York, and to the north by the Canadian province of Quebec. The name "Vermont" is derived from the French "les monts verts", or "the green mountains". In 1777, Vermont was declared a republic, and is one of only five states that were at one time independent nations. In 1791, Vermont was the first state after the original 13 colonies to join the United States of America. Tourism
is the state's largest
industry. Vermont ski resorts draw skiers from around the world.
Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Vermont for its golfing, fishing,
parks and
summer camps. Vermont has four distinct seasons. Daytime temperatures average in the mid-70s during the summer and fall to the low-20s during the winter. Rainfall is plentiful throughout the year, and snowfall can be up to 250 inches depending on elevation. As in most of New England, autumn foliage is spectacular in Vermont.
